University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville to Host Lifestyle Medicine Research Symposium

Posted

The University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville (SOMG) will host its inaugural Lifestyle Medicine Research Symposium on Sept. 25 at the SOMG campus, located at 607 Grove Rd, Greenville. The event is free and open to the public.

The symposium aims to address the significant impact of lifestyle behaviors on chronic diseases. Studies indicate that 80 percent of coronary artery disease, over 90 percent of Type 2 diabetes, and approximately 70 percent of stroke and colon cancer cases may be preventable through healthy lifestyle choices.

SOMG's mission is to equip clinicians with the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent and treat lifestyle-related chronic diseases, thereby enhancing patient care. Since its establishment in 2012, SOMG has become a leader in lifestyle medicine, developing innovative curricula and expertise focused on addressing the root causes of illness.

The symposium will feature research on the six key pillars of lifestyle medicine: nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, connectedness, and avoidance of risky substances. The goal is to inspire bold ideas, including bench-to-bedside solutions, that support clinical advancements in patient outcomes and provide guidance on everyday behaviors that significantly impact health.

The event schedule includes lunch and networking from 12:30 to 1 p.m., a welcome and research showcase with a poster session from 1 to 2 p.m., a panel discussion from 2 to 3:30 p.m., a break from 3:45 to 4 p.m., the Dr. E. Arthur Dreskin Distinguished Endowed Keynote Lecture from 4 to 5:15 p.m., and a reception from 5:15 to 6 p.m.

The Dr. E. Arthur Dreskin Distinguished Endowed Lecture Series honors Dr. E. Arthur Dreskin, M.D., whose leadership in medicine and public service left a lasting impact on South Carolina. The keynote lecture, titled "Fueling Health and Longevity: The Power of Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine," will be presented by Jennifer Trilk, Ph.D., FACSM, DipACLM, professor and director of lifestyle medicine programs at SOMG. Trilk will discuss the role of nutrition and lifestyle medicine in promoting health and preventing chronic diseases.

Designed for physicians, researchers, educators, students, and community members, Trilk's lecture will conclude with practical, actionable takeaways that participants can apply in their own settings. Attendees will leave with strategies for incorporating nutrition and lifestyle medicine into clinical conversations, research, education, personal health, and community initiatives — and with a clearer understanding of how these approaches can help fuel better health and longer, healthier lives.
