Spartanburg Methodist College Addresses Area Demand for Tech, Education, and Law Enforcement Professionals with Three New Degree Options

Posted

Spartanburg Methodist College will launch three new bachelor’s degrees this fall to help strengthen the state’s workforce in high-demand fields.

The South Carolina Department of Administration lists technology, teaching, and law enforcement among the top in-demand career areas in the state, and these new degrees aim to provide a meaningful boost to each one.

The college is adding a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice to its SMC Online line-up. It also will add two new concentrations to its Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies (BAMS) program – Information Technology (IT) will be offered online and Education on campus.

“We are being very deliberate in our growth at SMC, adding programs that our students are asking for, and the community is in need of,” said Dr. Curt Laird, provost and executive vice president of Academic Affairs at SMC. “Criminal justice, information technology, and education are three areas we feel we can make a difference in developing more workplace-ready graduates.”

The bachelor’s degree in criminal justice is an in-depth, stand-alone four-year degree program.

SMC already offers a criminal justice concentration as part of its customizable bachelor’s degree.

Officials said the new degree will focus strictly on criminal justice, preparing students to immediately pursue careers in law enforcement, legal consulting, corrections, or even moving on to law school.

SMC’s BA in Multidisciplinary Studies lets students combine two fields of study into one personalized degree.

Ranging from psychology to business to criminal justice, the program provides a well-rounded education with emphasis on students’ chosen concentrations.

With the recognized needs in the local economy, the college is adding concentrations in IT and education to help fill those employment gaps.

“It’s important to us to meet our students where they are to take them where they want to be,” said SMC President Scott Cochran. “That starts with providing the nurturing, supportive environment they need and ends with providing them with the degree programs they want combined with the professional skills they need to confidently move into the workplace. That’s the way college should be.”

Registration for the three new degree programs has begun, and each will hold its first classes this fall. For more information, go to www.smcsc.edu/academics.
