NPatel Communications Crafting Stories with Purpose

It’s a leap when you’re used to being the person who tells the story to now having to coach clients to tell their story

Based in Greenville, South Carolina, NPatel Communications is a boutique marketing and public relations firm founded by Nisha Patel in 2020. With over two decades of experience, Patel specializes in building awareness and credibility for businesses through strategic communication practices.

Patel graduated from University of South Carolina with a broadcast journalism degree. Her career started as an on-camera reporter in both the Augusta, Georgia, and Greenville, South Carolina, areas. After almost a decade being in front of the camera, she decided to shift her focus behind the scenes. “It’s a leap when you’re used to being the person who tells the story to now having to coach clients to tell their story,” she reflected. “Media relations and being a journalist have changed significantly over the last 20 years. There’s an undeniable power behind storytelling and an art that motivated me to start my own business.”

Looking back, Patel recalls her childhood aspirations of becoming a teacher, influenced by her mother’s career in education. "I was extremely shy as a kid – so much so that I could barely pick up the phone to order a pizza. I was 100 percent an introvert,” she laughed, remembering her introverted beginnings. However, her passion for storytelling ultimately guided her away from print journalism toward helping individuals share their stories.

As she began her freelance journey, Patel stepped in to assist a friend in need of marketing guidance. She created a “dummy-proof” strategy plan and presented it the very next day, landing her first client.

Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, Patel initially found navigating the complexities of running a business her biggest challenge. “I didn’t fully grasp what it took to manage a successful business – scheduling meetings, handling invoices, taxes and more,” she explained. What once seemed daunting now became one of her greatest accomplishments, alongside being a mother to three young children. For Patel, personal interactions like face-to-face meetings or coffee chats play a crucial role in business development.

At NPatel Communications, the focus is on helping clients craft compelling stories. Patel emphasizes the importance of understanding each client’s unique needs and goals, tailoring strategies accordingly. “When I meet with clients, 10 out of 10, their primary concern is attracting customers, but they don’t know what to do. Many believe that if they drop $20,000 on a billboard, people will come. The reality is that it doesn’t work that way,” she said. By attentively listening to clients, NPatel Communications develops customized plans aimed at fulfilling their organizational goals. Patel believes that every solopreneur or team should incorporate at least one public relations tactic into their strategy.

As media relations continue to evolve, Patel encourages businesses to invest in their marketing efforts if they meet certain criteria: 1) a compelling story to tell, 2) messaging that resonates with the target audience, and 3) the ability to convert interest into sales. “Having the right message and platform can make a significant difference in a company’s growth,” she stated.

Among her influential mentors is her father, an electrical engineer who later became an entrepreneur. “He taught me that pivoting is possible no matter your age,” she shared. Another key figure in her career was Marion Crawford from the Crawford marketing agency, where Patel worked for six years. This experience allowed her to wear multiple hats and equipped her with the skills to run her own firm. Her diverse communications background combined with an understanding of what journalists need to do their jobs efficiently has been instrumental in her success.
