Jabrial Tobin, the proud owner of JT Iconic Visuals Photography, embodies Nike’s empowering slogan, “Just do it,” as he navigates the journey of growing his business. His journey from a casual hobbyist to a thriving entrepreneur looking to make his mark in the photography world, serves as an inspiration to fellow entrepreneurs.

Originally from Williston, South Carolina, Jabrial took a bold step in 2015 by moving to Greenville to pursue his Mechanical Engineering and Technology degree at Greenville Tech. In 2019, he relocated to Columbia, where he earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering and Technology from Midlands Tech. It was during this time that he began to explore his passion for photography, initially focusing on friends and family.

“I decided to do a photoshoot with a model from my hometown and posted the results on Facebook,” Jabrial recalls. To his surprise, his notification feed exploded with inquiries from potential clients eager for his services. What started as a casual pastime quickly transformed into a full-time commitment. “After seeing the demand, I invested in a $3,000 camera and officially launched my business,” he says.

Transitioning from mechanical engineering to photography might seem unconventional, but for Jabrial, it was a natural evolution. Jabrial explains, “I’ve always worked full-time in engineering, including positions at Westinghouse and the South Carolina Department of Transportation. My father would give me cameras for holidays and celebrations, so my love for music and photography has been a lifelong passion.”

This passion shines through in his work. Jabrial attributes his growing clientele to his engaging personality, high-quality images, and exceptional service. He prides himself on being approachable and adaptable, focusing on understanding and meeting his clients’ unique needs. “I don’t do photography for the money; I do it for my clients,” he emphasizes.

Like any entrepreneur, Jabrial has faced his share of challenges. For him, the biggest hurdle has been increasing brand awareness. “I want to expand beyond my existing circle and earn a spot on the SC Best & Brightest List under 35,” he shares, referencing Integrated Media Publishing’s recent event that honored young achievers in the state. To reach this goal, Jabrial actively participates in networking events and groups, understanding the importance of building meaningful connections. “I’ve attended nearly every networking group in Columbia,” he adds, highlighting the significance of follow-up to foster relationships.

To boost his visibility, Jabrial has explored various marketing strategies. He is reevaluating his approach to digital advertising. His commitment to learning and adapting is evident as he’s participated in many networking events or groups.

Jabrial’s journey is a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and the courage to pursue one’s dreams. He encourages fellow entrepreneurs to “surround themselves with inspirational people and continue to grow.”

With a vision of quality, uniqueness, and exceptional service, Jabrial continues to push boundaries and elevate his craft.
